Summer in Dubai, high-class resorts at low-season prices

It’s about that time of year to start thinking about those two magical words. What two magical words? Well, the two magical words that bring a smile and a flutter of the heart to all who hear or read them. The two magical words that immediately transport you to the most breathtakingly beautiful place in your mind upon hearing them. The two magical words that combined bring about as much joy as an unexpected day off work and a birthday combined.

What are these two magical words?

Summer. Vacation
Ok, so now that you’ve gone away in your imagination for a minute or two, welcome back to the blog. I’m going to go out on a limb and surmise that the place you just went off to in your mind was warm, there was probably a gorgeous beach, and you were having the time of your life staying cool and relaxed.

Funny, that sounds a lot like Dubai to me. Yes, Dubai
You may think Dubai is somewhere you should only go when it’s cold at home because Dubai is too hot in the summer, and in the past I’ve made exactly the same mistake. The last time I visited Dubai it was November time, the hotels and beaches were busy and prices were quite a bit more expensive than the summer months. Having done a little more research, I’ve realised that this is a common mistake for people to make. While there is no doubt that it is very warm in the summer in Dubai, it can seemingly be a blast finding fun ways to beat that heat and at the same time escape the prickly prices of winter’s high season. Here’s some tips on how to do it best.

Climb to a cooler climate
One of the most stunning sights in Dubai and likely the first thing you will notice on the skyline there is the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. At the top of the Burj Khalifa lies a special observation deck where you can enjoy a view of Dubai from the sky. There are also high-tech telescopes that allow visitors to virtually time-travel to see what Dubai looked like in the past, what it will look like in the future, and what it looks like during both the day and night. The most important factor for visiting the Burj Khalifa in summer though is temperatures at the top of the tower can be 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than those on the ground.

Splish splash
When you envisioned that summer vacation, you probably imagined some fun in the water, and Dubai is awash with water activities to keep you cool. Between beaches, waterparks, and fabulous fountain shows, the sparkling Emirates water will help you beat the heat. Access to a beach or pool (extra chilled in the summer) will probably be included in your hotel package, and being that summer is the best time for discounts in Dubai, it will be even sweeter. Exhilarating waterparks like Wild Wadi and Aquaventure feature slides and wave pools that will keep that cool crisp water around you during your entire day out. While I don’t recommend getting wet in the famous Dubai Fountains, with all the mist they generate, a night time performance viewed from the front rows is sure to cool you off.

Summer on ice
Dubai has gained a reputation for many innovative things, but not many have brought Dubai as much buzz as Ski Dubai, the indoor ski slope and resort located in the Mall of the Emirates. Decked out with a chalet hotel and café serving hot chocolates, Ski Dubai transports you to an alpine world in the middle of the desert. Most importantly, Ski Dubai is open all year round, so when you visit Dubai during the summer, a spell on the frozen slopes will be extra enticing.

Morning time is tee time
With the temperature a bit on the high side in summer, it provides the perfect impetus to get out and enjoy some early morning golf. Crisp morning air will help the ball soar and an early lunch or late breakfast after golfing is a great way to start a day on vacation.

Shop until the mercury drops
Dubai is studded with world class shopping centers, modern malls, and historical souks of all types and themes, so you’re never far from a top-notch shopping experience. What makes them especially great in summer is that all the modern shopping centers are climate controlled with air conditioning, so even though it may be hot outside, you will stay cool as you peruse the racks of designer clothing and jewellery cases. As far as the centuries-old historical markets known as souks, they are covered and designed to keep both the shoppers and shopkeepers cool. After all, how can either customer or shopkeeper dig in their heels for a haggling session if they aren’t comfortable?

So there you have it; there is absolutely no reason why you can’t visit Dubai in the summer. Even if I haven’t managed to convince you, I’ve convinced myself. So if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to look at flights.
