Mr & Mrs Cathro share their Australian Honeymoon story
Q. Was this your first visit to Oceania?
A. No, we have never been so far on a flight before. It seemed daunting at first, but with the excitement it literally flew!
Q. Why did you choose this particular holiday?
A. We'd always wanted to go to Australia, and with it being our honeymoon and more than likely our last holiday as a couple for a while (i.e., before we start a family!), we wanted a real adventure.
Q. What did you most like about the hotel?
A. During our three-week trip we stayed in over 15 different hotels, and we really liked the variety, from the stylish and contemporary 1888 hotel in Sydney to the more traditional hotel in Hunter Valley.
Q. What did you most like about the cities?
A. We stopped in Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane. Sydney was our favourite due to the iconic skyline incorporating the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.
Q. Did you do any trips whilst there? If so please tell us about them
A. In Melbourne, we attended the 2015 F1 GP. Not the most exciting of races (!) but the entertainment before and after was thoroughly enjoyable. Being 80s children, we also had to go on the Neighbours tour, which was a lot of fun. In Sydney, we climbed the Harbour Bridge.
Q. What were your holiday highlights and why?
A. By far the best highlight was the Sydney Harbour Bridge walk, good fun, unique activity, excellent guides and obviously amazing views.
Q. What made you go Wow (if anything)?
A. The most surreal experience, and one which took our breath away, was at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Walking the walls of fallen soldiers and seeing the sea of poppies left by relatives of the respective soldiers was quite emotional. Also, the view from Cape Byron Lighthouse was beautiful.
Q. What was your favourite thing about the holiday?
A. The variety of wildlife we were able to see –kangaroos, echidnas, emus... We also went to Phillip Island and were able to watch wild penguins coming in from the sea to nest, which was a pretty amazing sight.
Q. Were there any particular hotel staff members that stood out for you and why?
A. The young lady who gave us warm cookies on arrival at the Double Tree Hilton Melbourne! Very welcome after such a long trip!
Q. Did you have any concerns before going on this holiday? If so what were they?
A. Our only real concern was the duration of the flight, but the outgoing flight was fine on the way out (probably due to the excitement!) and we were lucky enough to be able to upgrade to business class for the return. So in the end, both trips were pleasurable. On the way out, the hostesses learned that it was our honeymoon, so they made us a card and brought us some champagne and dessert, which was a nice touch!
