Overview

Experience the bright lights of Vietnam’s capital, sail UNESCO-listed Halong Bay and explore iconic rice paddies. This five day Vietnam escorted tour adventure starts in Hanoi, where you’ll tour the colonial Old Quarter and visit temples and pagodas, then continues to Ninh Binh, a peaceful countryside escape. The trip ends with an overnight cruise on Halong Bay, where you’ll visit caves, kayak and sail amongst over 2,000 limestone karsts.

Other trip highlights include having lunch with a Vietnamese family in the countryside, learning to make papier-mâché masks and creating some signature dishes in a cooking class. You’ll also have the chance to take a street food tour in the capital and a boat trip in Ninh Binh. This tour offers the perfect mix of history, nature, food and culture, offering a great introduction to northern Vietnam (BRT-BAVHHH).

Day 1

Hanoi

Welcome to Vietnam! Your tour starts in the lively capital, Hanoi, a city full of colonial charm, tree-lined streets and thousands of beeping motorbikes. Check into your hotel and meet up with the rest of the tour group for dinner. You’ll dine on Vietnamese cuisine at KOTO, a social enterprise restaurant that employs disadvantaged young people.

Day 2

Hanoi

Start the day with an optional walking tour of this fascinating capital. Sights include the Chinese inspired Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, which is the final resting place of Vietnam’s revolutionary leader. Learn the legend of the ornate One Pillar Pagoda, built by an emperor in honour of the Goddess of Mercy.

Your guide will show you the charming Old Quarter, which is filled with French colonial architecture, and you’ll meet a Hanoian family that makes traditional papier-mâché masks - you’ll even get the chance to make your own. In the evening, enjoy a street food tour to taste some of Hanoi’s delights, such as a ban mi pork sandwich and spring rolls.

Day 3

Hanoi – Ninh Binh

Say goodbye to the city and take a private vehicle to lush Ninh Binh province. This area is characterised by its lime-green rice paddies and rivers surrounded by limestone karsts, earning it the nickname Halong Bay on Land. To explore this landscape, take a boat trip in the Van Long Nature Reserve, which is surrounded by forest-covered hills.

Share a Vietnamese lunch at a family home before transferring to your hotel, where you can spend the rest of the day as you please. Relax, go for a walk or continue exploring independently.

Day 4

Ninh Binh – Halong Bay

This morning you’ll leave Ninh Binh for an overnight cruise on, Halong Bay, Vietnam’s most famous site. Board the Emeraude to sail the calm waters, taking in views of the bay’s unique limestone formations. There will be a stop at Sung Sot Grotto, known as Surprise Cave, a huge cavern filled with centuries-old stalagmites and stalactites.

Later you can kayak across Halong Bay and even go swimming if it’s warm enough. Evening activities include a Vietnamese cooking class and screening of the film Indochine on the deck.

Day 5

Halong Bay – Hanoi

If you like, get up early to watch the sunrise over the UNESCO-listed bay before breakfast on the sundeck. Optional activities include swimming, hiking, kayaking and tai chi. If you visit in summer there’s also the opportunity to visit a pearl farm.

Finally, you’ll pass the scenic Bai Tu Long Bay area and Ba Hai and Hang Ma islands before disembarking. Back on land, you’ll be transferred to Hanoi where the trip ends.
