Sitting on the most easterly tip of Mexico, Cancun has grown remarkably over the last 40 years from a tiny settlement to a thriving city. It is divided into two main sections – the city itself and a long stretch of land connected by bridge to mainland, known as Cancun Island or the ‘hotel zone’. Cancun Island is where the hotels are based, although we also offer a number of hotels further along the coast, south of the airport.

Cancun is blessed with premium coastline, plentiful nightlife and unbelievable value for money – it’s a real party town where you can have a lot of fun. And while it’s styled as The Mexican Caribbean, it’s worth remembering that it is very different from the rest of the Caribbean. You’ll find the beaches are just as beautiful and the sunshine just as bright, but you should also expect a distinctively Latin flavor to the food and the nightlife.

While Cancun comes from Mayan beginnings (and no-one is exactly sure what ‘Cancun’ means) the recent development of the city has seen the population grow through people from other parts of Mexico heading here for the prosperity. The result is a mixture of Mexican traditions and customs, but a culture based around providing excellent service to tourists.

Important Information

There are currently four taxes that are payable for visitors to Mexico.

• The Mexico Tourist Tax and the Mexican International Airport Usage tax are included in your airfare and so no additional payment is required during your holiday
• The Environmental Tax applies to all visitors to Mexico. The tax varies in each area and will be applied to your hotel bill and in some cases must be paid directly to the hotel upon departure. Where possible we will pre-pay  this for you within your hotel cost and the hotel will confirm this to you.
  - Cancun area hotels- $85.00 Mexican Pesos, approx USD$5 per room per night.
  - Riviera Maya, Puerto Moreles and Playa Del Carmen - $80.00 Mexican Pesos, approx USD$4 per room per night.
  - Baja California / Los Cabos / Puerto Vallarta - $83.00 Mexican Pesos, approx USD$5 per room per night.
  - Jalisco and Nayarit - no fees apply, this is subject to change
• The VISITAX - a mandatory Tourist Usage Fee for the state of Quintana Roo only, which funds local infrastructure projects and protects assets such as beaches and Mayan sites.  This is currently MXN284.00 (approximately USD20.80) per person and must be paid by all travellers aged 15 years or over visiting the state of Quintana Roo (which primarily covers the beach resorts from Holbox and Cancun in the north, all the Riviera Maya region through Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, and down to Chetumal in the south). It is not included in your holiday price. Payment can be made either prior to travel, during your stay, or at the airport on your return. It is essential that payment is made prior to your departure flight and that you obtain a QR code to show as proof of payment by visiting the following website - https://www.visitax.gob.mx/sitio/ - please only use this site. We recommend completing this prior to travel, but if you have any problems, the hotel front desk teams will be able to help during your stay.
