Colombia is the ideal destination for both nature lovers and city explorers, in addition to foodies and cultural enthusiasts in equal measure. This virtually untouched land is adorned by golden Caribbean coast, magnificent Andean summits and picturesque colonial communities which overflow in history through narrow cobblestone pathways and centuries-old architecture. This 7-night independent tour explores two of the nation’s most diverse and fascinating cities: Bogota, the country’s capital, and Cartagena, the undisputed queen of the Caribbean coast.

Starting in Colombia’s beating heart, Bogota is cradled by the snow-capped peaks of the Andes and overflows in rich colonial history and beauty. You’ll enjoy around three days in this sophisticated metropolis, including a full-day tour of the capital’s greatest sights – including the cultural epicentre of Le Candelaria, the Monserrate Hill and a pre-Columbian salt cathedral built 180 metres below the surface in the town of Zipaquira.

You’ll then hop on a flight to the beautifully-preserved city of Cartagena, which lies within an incredible 13 kilometres of colonial stone walls. You’ll explore the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Old Town – a maze of cobblestone alleys and spectacular, pastel-shaded churches which tower against the cobalt sky. You’ll enjoy a full tour of the historic city and an entire day at leisure before heading out on a full-day tour to Isla Del Encanto, home to beautiful coral beaches and vibrant tropical reefs for a day of relaxation before your return home.

  • Explore the capital’s (Bogota) famous historic centre, including Plaza de Bolivar, National Capitol, Casa de los Comuneros, Casa de Narino and the Santa Clara Church Museum
  • Admire the beautiful blend in contemporary architecture and centuries-old colonial buildings in Cartagena, a delicately preserved city with a UNESCO-Listed Old Town
  • Visit El Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, one of Cartagena’s most iconic landmarks with a fascinating history dating over 480 years.
  • Delight in the spectacular coral beaches and abundant tropical marine life in Isla Del Encanto, located in the south of Baru as part of the Carales del Rosario National Park

Day 1

Upon arrival in Bogota, transfer to your hotel of choice. The rest of the day is at leisure to get your bearings of the city and relax before a busy day tomorrow.

Overnight (3 nights)

Day 2

After breakfast, a representative will meet you at the hotel at 9am to take you on a tour around the historic city centre. Your first stop will be Plaza de Bolivar, where you will walk along the beautiful streets to see some of the city’s most important buildings including the National Capitol, Casa de los Comuneros, Casa de Narino and the Santa Clara Church Museum.

The tour also includes a visit to the Gold Museum, which exhibits around 34,000 pieces of metalwork, and the House Museum Quinta de Bolivar, the house which belonged to Simon Bolivar. You’ll then continue to an iconic symbol of Bogota – the Monserrate Hill, which rises to 3,152 metres above sea level. Here, you will visit the sanctuary where you will find the statue of Lord of Miracles; from here, you’ll enjoy one of the finest views of the cityscapes. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure.

The Gold Museum and Quinta de Bolivar are closed on Mondays – instead, you will visit Museo de Botero and Museo Casa de la Mondea.

Day 3

Either at 9am (Saturday & Sunday) or 2pm (Monday – Friday), a representative will meet you at the hotel to take you on a tour through La Sabana de Bogota to the town of Zipaquira, where back in pre-Colombian times, salt around the area was the most important commodity and ‘salt cakes’ were the only trading currency. Over time, technology improved and larger amounts of salt were able to be extracted; as a result, un underground Salt Cathedral was built 180 metres below the surface. Explore the cathedral and chapel before returning to Bogota for the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 4

The tour starts in the modern neighbourhoods of Bocagrande and Manga, where you will discover the contrasts between modern architecture and the beauty of old twentieth century homes.

Afterwards, visit one of Cartagena’s most iconic landmarks; El Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, a castle which carries a remarkable history stretching back over 480 years which has been invaded by pirates, admirals and barons, but still stands proudly to this day. The city tour will end with a walk around the historic downtown, visiting the San Pedro Claver Church and the Emerald Museum.

Day 6

It’s an early start today as you head out on a full-day tour of Isla Del Encanto. After breakfast, you’ll transfer by speedboat to Isla Del Encanto, located in the south of Baru, part of the Carales del Rosario National Park.
