Mallorca (also known as Mejorca) has all the hallmarks of a sun-dappled Spanish getaway, integrated with its own unique enticements. One day you’ll be exploring the colourful city of Palma, drinking fine wines with the locals and wandering through art galleries, and the next you could be cycling through Serra de Tramuntana to the tiny village of Deiá, or picking oranges in Fornalutx’s luscious citrus plantations. Mallorca truly has a way of making you feel at home, with many choosing to return to the island’s alluring Mediterranean beaches and friendly towns year after year.

Why visit Mallorca?

• Palma de Mallorca, the island’s capital, is one of our favourite European cities. Amongst the honey-coloured houses you’ll find traces of the city’s past, including the Moorish Almudaina Royal Palace and gothic 13th century Santa María Cathedral. Meanwhile, the narrow, cobbled stone streets lead you towards a treasure trove of art galleries, cosy restaurants, craft studios and ocean-view bars. Even if you’ve never set foot here before, Palma has a familiar and friendly ambience, especially when you explore the bohemian neighbourhoods and gorgeous public squares.
• The landscape of Mallorca will have you picking your jaw up from the ground. Lovely cycle lanes trace their way along the stunning coastline of secluded coves, with remote limestone mountains soaring high into the sky. We love Mallorca’s vibrant citrus groves, especially Valle de los Naranjos in Sóller where you’ll find acres of lush orange trees.
• The astonishing mountain range Serra de Tramuntana is not only perfect for hikers and cyclists, but it’s also home to one of our favourite villages – Deiá. Once the place where Grace Kelly and Prince Rainer honeymooned, this picturesque mountain village is framed by wild natural beauty, the white-washed limestone architecture now home to small art galleries, low-key restaurants and adorned with flourishing Spanish flora and fruit.
• It’s not a coastal European escape without sumptuous cuisine. We love tucking into the Spanish street-food delights, including sobrasada – a cured pâté-soft sausage spread onto crisp bread and paired with a cold beer, flaky ensaimadas – Mallorca’s answer to the croissant, and tumbet – a hearty dish of vegetables slowly cooked in tomato sauce that dates back to the 16th century.
