Overview

A real Irish experience, staying in historic farmhouses as you make this independent self-drive tour of rural Ireland. You will bask in the warmth of the famed Irish hospitality as you tour the picturesque countryside, visit historic towns & monuments and stay in charming privately-owned farmhouses.

Beginning in Dublin, you will enjoy a couple of days in beautiful Wicklow before travelling to the quaint medieval town of Kilkenny. Here you can stroll the ancient narrow lanes and discover the 12th century castle. Explore the picturesque coastal villages of the south and marvel at the spectacular views as you drive the scenic Ring of Kerry. Immerse yourself in rural Ireland in the charming villages of Killorgin, Irish-speaking Sneem and Cahersiveen which is the birthplace of Daniel O’Connell. In Limerick, visit historic St John’s Castle and the quirky Hunt Museum. Your tour ends in the Dublin region, allowing you to choose your last day either exploring the fascinating Birr Castle Demesne or returning to the capital to enjoy some more of this vibrant city. Day 1

Dublin - Wicklow

Arrival at Dublin airport where you will pick up your hire car, then take the short drive south into Wicklow where you will spend your first two nights in a charming historic farmhouse in the Wicklow Area

Overnight: Ballinclea House or similar

Day 2

Dublin - Wicklow

Today you have the enviable choice of either spending the day in the vibrant city of Dublin or exploring the area around Wicklow. In Dublin you can see the historic sites such as St Patricks Cathedral or Trinity College and the Book of Kells, you can browse the shops along Grafton Street or soak up the atmosphere of Temple Bar. Alternatively you may choose to take the short drive to Pwerscourt House to stroll the gardens which have been voted number three in the worlds best gardens by National Geographic. You can also visit the 6th century monastic settlement at Glendalough, in its picturesque setting in the Valley of the Two Lakes.

Day 3

Kilkenny

This morning, drive to the charming medieval town of Kilkenny, if you wish stopping at the Irish National Stud on the way. In Kilkenny, a good place to start is the Shee Alms house, a shelter for the poor during the Middle Ages but now the Tourist Office. Soak up the ancient ambience as you stroll the narrow lanes and admire the historic sites. You can also visit Kilkenny Castle dating back to the year 1172, in its 50-acre park set on the banks of the River Nore. Tonight you will stay in a historic farmhouse in the Kilkenny area.

Day 4

Cork - Kerry

Leave Kilkenny and drive southbound towards the south coast. On the way you can visit the Old Middleton Distillery to learn how Irish whiskey is made. Or perhaps visit Blarney Castle to kiss the Blarney Stone and be bestowed with the “gift of eloquence”. Continue to County Cork where you will be able to explore the quaint fishing villages. Spend two nights in a charming farmhouse in this region.

Day 5

Ring of Kerry

Today you will tour one of Irelands most beautiful regions – the Ring of Kerry. Admire the stunning mountains, valleys and lakes. Drive along the dramatic coastline of the Iveragh Peninsula and through the pictuesque villages of Killorglin, Waterville and Irish-speaking Sneem, and visit Daniel O’Conells birth place at Cahersiveen. You can also visit the magnificent Victorian mansion Muckross House, and stroll around the beautiful gardens.

Day 6

Limerick - Tipperary

In the morning you can drive to Tralee and to the Kerry Museum which traces the history of Kerry from 5,000BC to the present day. Continue onto Limerick and visit historic St John’s Castle, and perhaps the quirky Hunt Museum. You can also visit Bunratty Castle & Folk Park where you can see Irish village life from the 19th century recreated. Tonight you will stay in a charming farmhouse in the Limerick / Tipperary area.

Day 7

Kildare – Dublin region

Return to the Dublin region and you can choose to visit the wonderful Birr Castle Demesne, home to the Earl of Rosse and his family. Here you can visit the fascinating Historic Science Center which charts the time when Birr was the hub of scientific discovery in the 1800’s. You can also see the awe-inspiring “Great Telescope”, which was created by the Third Earl of Rosse in 1840, the largest telescope in the world until the early twentieth century. Spend the night in the Kildare or Meath area just outside of Dublin.

Dublin departure
